A Special Environment
All births—whether the baby needs
extra medical treatment or not—
receive special attention and care
at Tri-City’s Women’s and Children’s
Services. The staff has a strong
commitment to providing a warm and
nurturing environment for babies and
parents. That environment includes:
• Bilingual nurses.
• Skype (video conferencing)
capabilities for military families.
• Golden hour, a time immediately
after childbirth that helps mother
and baby bond. Provided the baby
is stable, he or she is put on the
mom’s chest and left there for an
hour before anything else, such as
weighing the baby, is done.
Tri-City also offers midwifery services.
Women can opt for an obstetrician
or a midwife to assist them with their
birth—giving moms more choices for
their childbirth experience.
Recently, the medical center
announced that it is affiliating with
San Diego Perinatal Center, a division
of Rady Children’s Specialists, to care
for high-risk pregnancies. Under the
agreement, perinatologists will provide
Tri-City obstetricians with coverage for
patients with complicated pregnancies
around the clock. Perinatologists are
brought in when there are concerns
regarding birth defects; abnormalities;
medical issues with the mother; prior
pregnancy complications; and multiple
pregnancies, such as twins.
This new offering rounds out the
services expectant mothers can receive
from Tri-City.
Healthy Babies and Beyond
The medical center offers many
classes and services to help women
and their families feel supported
before, during and after the baby’s
birth. Classes and services include:
• Childbirth preparation, baby care
and baby safety classes.
• Sibling classes.
• Pediatrician referral.
• Car seat safety.
• Breastfeeding assistance from a
lactation consultant.
• High-risk infant developmental
clinic.
“We have a rich culture of
providing excellent care to our
patients,” Davies said. “We want
people to have a real family
experience while they’re with us.”
NURSE-MIDWIVES
EXPERTS FOR
LOW-RISK
PREGNANCIES
Many women want to try to give birth
with as little medical intervention
as necessary. For women from all
walks of life, that can mean using a
nurse-midwife.
Tri-City Medical Center partners
with the nurse-midwives from North
County Health Services (NCHS). That
way, NCHS patients who deliver at
Tri-City can choose a nurse-midwife as
an alternative or complement to the
care of a doctor.
“We think of pregnancy, labor
and birth as natural life events,”
said Mimi Mateo, CNM, MSN, CDE,
clinical director of midwifery at
NCHS. “We are experts in normal
births, which most births are. If
something steps outside of the
normal, we work in collaboration with
our own obstetrician and with other
doctors on staff at Tri-City, including
the neonatologists,” Mateo said.
“They are the experts in medical
complications.”
“Sometimes things can go wrong,”
said Dr. Nicole Esposito, who gave
birth to her son at Tri-City last fall with
Mateo’s help. “So it was important
to me to find a midwife who worked
closely with a hospital system to
provide OB-GYN backup for a safety
net if I needed it.”
“My experience with Mimi was
nothing short of amazing,” Dr. Esposito
said. “Working with her helped me
feel as though I had someone there
for me in all aspects of my pregnancy,
both physically and emotionally. I was
able to have a natural delivery without
any interventions, which was exactly
what I wanted.”
