LIVE WELL
WITH DIABETES
THE TRI-CITY WELLNESS CENTER CAN HELP
If you have diabetes, your healthcare team has
probably stressed this advice: Get some exercise.
Manage your weight. Eat healthful foods.
That sounds simple enough. However, changing
your diet and becoming more active can be a
challenge—but one worth doing. Here are a few
suggestions for getting started:
1. Make a move.
Exercise can help lower your blood
sugar (glucose) level and help your body better use
insulin. That’s why being physically active is an important
part of managing diabetes. Start by walking 10 minutes
a day, then work up to 30 minutes. Be sure to ask your
doctor if there are exercises you should avoid.
2. Focus on healthful foods.
Eating healthfully
helps you control your blood sugar, blood pressure
and weight. And making good choices about what
to eat when you have diabetes doesn’t have to be
complicated. Choose vegetables, fruits, whole-grain
bread and pasta, beans, nonfat dairy products, fish,
poultry, and lean meats. Limit starchy foods.
3. Seek support—and have fun.
You don’t have to
figure out how to control diabetes on your own—the
new medically integrated diabetes management
program at Tri-City Wellness Center can help. It
provides customized exercise and diet classes taught
by degreed professionals specifically trained in
managing diabetes.
Register for the diabetes management program
at Tri-City Wellness Center by calling
760.931.3171
.
The program costs $35 for members of the Wellness
Center and $60 for nonmembers. Included in
the program:
• A comprehensive fitness assessment from a
diabetes exercise specialist
• A one-on-one nutrition consultation with a
registered dietitian
• Supervised group exercise classes on Mondays
and Fridays
• A support group nutrition class every Wednesday,
led by a registered dietitian
• Free cooking classes especially for people with
diabetes or prediabetes—check the upcoming
events listings at
www.tricitywellness.com
for
dates and times or see the calendar on page 19 of
this edition of Healthy You.
Though he hasn’t continued running, Cobb’s experience
helped him regain strength and enthusiasm for surfing.
“I felt like I was 15,” he said. “I was so energized—and I
still am, two years later.”
Changing Lives
According to Freeman, Lucky 13 winners—all of whom have
already overcome serious health challenges—often report
feeling empowered by:
• Sharing the motivation that comes from taking on a
challenging goal with a supportive group
• Making powerful connections with fellow participants
• Learning to eat well and work out safely
The Lucky 13 contest is just one of the many life-changing
programs at Tri-City Wellness Center—and the only one
that requires winning a contest. Whatever your age, current
activity level or health goals, Wellness Center professionals
can design a program to help improve your quality of life.
